Recuva — The Free First Aid for Deleted Windows Files

Recuva is the free recovery tool most Windows households reach for first. What it can really find in 2026, when to stop using it, and which paid tool to switch to.

What it does

Recuva scans the volume (quick scan reads the file-table remnants; deep scan reads raw blocks and rebuilds by signature). You pick what to recover — folders, or whole categories (photos, docs, media) — and it writes to a different volume. The free version does the job for a single lost folder; the paid Pro tier adds deep-scan speed, support, and no nag. For anything bigger than that (an array, a 16TB volume, a NAS share), the pro tools below are worth the money.

Pricing and the free tier

Free for home use; Recuva Pro is ~$30/yr (2026 list). Recuva is free to download and run; the paid tier removes the nag screen and adds priority deep-scan and support. For a household, the free tier usually covers it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Recuva free or paid in 2026?

Free for home use; Pro is ~$30/yr for faster deep scan and support. The free tier is genuinely usable for a lost folder.

Can Recuva recover from a NAS?

Recuva runs on Windows. For a NAS array you need a tool that understands the NAS's RAID layout — R-Studio or UFS Raw — and a vendor-specific recovery mode. Recuva is not a NAS tool.

Why does Recuva sometimes find nothing?

Two reasons: the volume was reformatted or zeroed (the file table is gone), or a full scan has not been run. Quick scans miss most recoverable files; run a deep scan and read from a different volume.

Tools are half the picture — the snapshot and backup layer is the other half. See the 3-2-1 backup guide, the ransomware recovery walkthrough, and what decryption tools actually exist.
