NAS Ransomware Decryption Tools — What Actually Exists (and What Doesn't)
This page lists every decryption option that actually exists for NAS ransomware families — and says plainly where nothing exists. If a tool or service isn't listed here, assume it's either useless or a middleman that pays attackers and pockets the difference.
Tier 1 — Free decryptors that exist
- eCh0raix, pre-17-July-2019 variant: community decryptors (BloodDolly's ech0raix decryptor, Emsisoft-era tools) can brute-force the flawed key generation. Identification: ransom note is
README_FOR_DECRYPT.txt(single t). Newer variants (.txtt) — no. - Generic broken-implementation cases: No More Ransom and Emsisoft's decryptor portal host free tools for many families — check both with your exact family name. NAS families are rare there precisely because most used sound crypto.
Tier 2 — Recovery that isn't "decryption" but works
- Snapshots: Synology Snapshot Replication, QNAP Storage & Snapshots, TOS Snapshot. The single most common real-world save in every campaign. How to use them safely.
- Cloud-sync version history: OneDrive/Google Drive/etc. keep pre-encryption versions on the server side even after the NAS uploaded encrypted copies. Used successfully in the 2026 wave.
- Memory forensics (C3RB3R): the open-source c3rb3r-rescue project extracted per-file keys from the still-running malware process's memory and fully decrypted a 49 GB GitLab backup. Requirements: the NAS was NOT rebooted after infection, and comfort with a forensic workflow. If that's you: their repo documents the procedure; capture memory first, ask questions later.
- Offline/rotated backups: not decryption — just the winning move. 3-2-1 setup.
Tier 3 — Where nothing exists (state of play, 2026-10-31)
| Family | Free decryptor | Realistic recovery |
|---|---|---|
| C3RB3R (.L0CK3D) | None confirmed | Snapshots / backup / cloud versions / memory forensics |
| DeadBolt | None (vendor-master-key offer proven fake) | Snapshots / backup |
| Qlocker | None public | Backup (campaign over, but no tool emerged) |
| eCh0raix (current) | None | Snapshots / backup |
On "ransomware recovery services"
A 2026 investigation covered across r/technology and TechSpot documented a recovery firm that promised decryption, then simply paid the ransom and charged the victim a markup. For families with no decryptor, anyone promising decryption is either lying or paying. Legitimate help looks like: your vendor's support channel, your national CERT (KISA and Macau PJ were both active in October 2026), and the tools on this page.
FAQ
Is there any C3RB3R decryptor I can buy or download?
No confirmed decryptor exists as of 31 October 2026 — free or paid. Watch Synology's advisory page and No More Ransom for a legitimate release; treat any other offer as a scam or a hidden ransom payment.
Do data-recovery programs (Recuva, PhotoRec, R-Studio) help with encrypted NAS files?
Almost never. Those tools recover deleted or damaged files; ransomware-encrypted files are intact but cryptographically locked. The exceptions: snapshots, shadow copies, and cloud version history — which is what the recovery guide walks through.
What's the one free thing everyone should set up tonight?
Versioned cloud sync of your irreplaceable folder, or a USB backup you then unplug. Both are free-to-cheap, take under an hour, and outperform every decryptor that doesn't exist.
