What it does

Install the URBackup server on a NAS (community packages exist for Synology/QNAP; it also runs on a Windows box). Install the agent on each machine you want to protect — Windows workstations, laptops, and NAS-to-NAS shares. Set a schedule; jobs run incrementally with a full baseline, keep a version history, and the web UI lets you browse and restore any previous state. It is one of the few genuinely free options that also does cloud copy in 2026.

Pricing

Free and open-source. No per-machine fee, no cloud tier. If you want to add an off-site cloud copy, pair URBackup's on-prem job with Duplicati or Synology's Hyper Backup cloud copy — URBackup's own cloud support has historically lagged the major cloud providers.

Frequently asked questions

Can URBackup back up from a Synology to cloud?

The on-prem path (NAS-to-NAS or NAS-to-agent) is strong. Cloud copy in 2026 is supported for a subset of providers; many households pair URBackup for the on-prem copy and Duplicati or Hyper Backup for the cloud copy.

Is URBackup safe on a home network?

It uses plain HTTP by default on the LAN; turn on HTTPS with a self-signed or Let's Encrypt cert for WAN exposure, or keep it LAN-only and access it through your NAS's QuickConnect.
