Unraid as Home NAS: Ransomware Risk, Docker Exposure and Hardening
Unraid's single-parity array and Docker apps are loved by home builders — and Docker is exactly where the risk lives. What to know in 2026.
What it does
Pricing
Good at
- Mixed disk sizes, incremental expansion
- Media servers (Plex/Jellyfin) with Docker
- Single-parity arrays that survive two disk failures with parity + snapshots
Not for
- Users who want vendor support and a polished UI
- Critical data with no second copy (Unraid parity is not a backup)
Key features
- Single-parity array with mixed disk sizes
- Docker + plugin ecosystem
- Parity + user shares + snapshots
- License per USB stick, one-time
The real risks
Docker apps are the front door. A container with a published port and a vulnerable web app is how home Unraid boxes get hit. Every published port is internet-reachable if you port-forward.
User shares without snapshots. Unraid's snapshot story is weaker than ZFS: the array itself has no native snapshot layer. Without the ZFS-on-arrays feature or a plugin, there is no undo.
Parity is not a backup. The parity disk rebuilds a failed disk — it does not restore yesterday's files. Ransomware that encrypts the array leaves parity 'consistent' with the encrypted data.
SMB exposure and weak credentials. Home boxes often run SMB with a single user. Expose it (port forward, UPnP) and you are brute-force territory.
License tied to a USB stick. Lose the stick, go through license recovery — keep a copy of the stick's config.
Hardening steps
- Do not port-forward Docker containers; put them behind a reverse proxy with auth (or Tailscale).
- Enable the ZFS-on-arrays snapshot schedule, or use the Community Applications snapshot plugin — get a real undo layer.
- Back up appdata separately (a share-to-cloud job): rebuilding 20 containers from scratch after an array wipe is the real cost.
- Turn off UPnP on the router; audit port-forward rules twice a year.
- SMB users: least privilege, unique passwords, no admin share mapped on the Windows box you browse from.
- Keep the Unraid USB config backed up (the license recovery depends on it).
- Patch Unraid and containers monthly; containers do not auto-update.
- Test one file restore from snapshot — Unraid's undo layer is manual by default.
Frequently asked questions
Does Unraid have snapshots?
Not natively on the classic array. Use the ZFS-on-arrays feature (Unraid 6.12+) or a snapshot plugin — without one, ransomware has no undo layer on the array.
How much does Unraid cost in 2026?
From ~$49 (Starter, fewer devices) to ~$109+ (Unleashed/Pro) one-time (2026 list). No subscription.
