TrueNAS (CORE/SCALE) as Home NAS: Ransomware Risk and Hardening
TrueNAS is the self-built NAS OS for x86 hardware. What its snapshot and replication layers do against ransomware, and the 8 steps that make an install survivable.
What it does
Pricing
Good at
- Households with x86 hardware and a DIY streak
- ZFS snapshots as the primary ransomware defense
- Free, no license fees, ever
Not for
- Plug-and-play households (a Synology is up in 20 minutes)
- Users who do not want to learn ZFS
Key features
- ZFS: checksummed, snapshotted, self-healing storage
- Scheduled snapshots + replication to a second TrueNAS or cloud
- SMB/NFS/iSCSI shares
- Free and open source
The real risks
Admin UI exposure. The web UI on port 443 is the front door. Expose it to the internet and you are in C3RB3R territory — keep it LAN-only or behind a VPN.
SMB shares without a snapshot schedule. ZFS snapshots are the undo layer, but they are not on by default. A share without a snapshot schedule encrypts with no way back.
Ransomware via a mapped drive from an infected PC. If a Windows box with malware maps the SMB share, it encrypts what it can read. The snapshot layer is the undo — but only if you kept one.
Apps and plugins as an entry. TrueNAS SCALE apps run containers; a vulnerable app with a mounted dataset is an entry. Keep apps off your primary datasets.
No vendor patch pipeline. You are the update mechanism. iXsystems publishes security advisories; you have to apply them.
Hardening steps
- Turn on automatic snapshots for every dataset (daily, keep 14–30). This is the single highest-value setting in TrueNAS.
- Replicate snapshots off the box: a second TrueNAS, or cloud (rclone to S3/B2). A snapshot on the same pool is not a backup.
- Keep the web UI LAN-only or behind Tailscale/WireGuard.
- Do not run apps on your primary datasets; give containers their own pool.
- SMB users: least-privilege per share, no admin share mapped on Windows boxes.
- Enable 2FA on the admin account (supported in recent SCALE).
- Subscribe to iXsystems security advisories and patch within the week.
- Test a snapshot rollback and a replication failover once — before you need it.
Frequently asked questions
Is TrueNAS safe from ransomware?
Safer than a default Windows box, because ZFS snapshots + replication give you a real undo layer. But snapshots alone on the same pool are not a backup — you need the off-box copy too.
Does TrueNAS cost money?
The software is free and open source. You pay for hardware (x86 board, ECC RAM recommended, disks).
